Following on from last week’s steady stream of new mobile handsets and smartphone offerings – courtesy of Nokia, Samsung and LG – this week kicks off with T-Mobile USA and HTC taking a turn in the spotlight with the new myTouch 3G.
Arriving as the long-awaited successor to the original T-Mobile and HTC G1, which introduced the world to the Google-backed Android operating system, the myTouch 3G promises “an array of new features” that expands upon the existing handset’s selection of attributes.
Providing users with a touch-screen display and a virtual keyboard
built into a sleek and contoured lightweight chassis design, the myTouch 3G looks to secure consumer appeal with access support for Android Market, along with customisable menus, wallpapers, icons and more.
Available in a trio of colour flavours – black, white and “distinctive” merlot – the myTouch 3G includes Wi-Fi and 3G network support, twice the processing memory of the G1 (now 512MBs) and core features and functions such as a 3.2-inch HVGA touch screen (320 x 480) with automatic portrait and landscape switching, and a 3.2 mega pixel camera.
Other contributing features include an onboard music player, a preinstalled 4GB microSD memory card, enhanced video capabilities, easy upload access to the likes of YouTube and Picasa, gesture-based navigation, one-touch access to a host of Google services, a wide selection of messaging and mailing solutions, and innovative new applications such as Sherpa – a learning engine that automatically customises itself to the user’s preferences and prioritises recommended retailers, restaurants and attractions accordingly.
“T-Mobile myTouch 3G puts you first, so you can create a mobile experience that is truly your own,” trumpeted Deny Marie Post, chief marketing officer for T-Mobile USA.
“There’s no cookie-cutter approach to myTouch,” he added. “Inside and out, there are boundless possibilities for personalization so you can put your personal touch on the phone and make it uniquely yours.”
Available for pre-order for existing T-Mobile customers from July 08, the myTouch 3G will cost $199.99 USD alongside a two-year service contract. Shipping for those pre-orders will begin in late July, according to T-Mobile USA. Availability for general consumers will begin in August.
First introduced into the market in October of 2008, the original G1 handset has, according to T-Mobile, already sold more than a million units.
