PSP beats Wii, DS in second-week streak

Sales for Sony Corp.’s PSP handheld outsold Nintendo Co.’s DS handheld and Wii console in the latest Japan retail charts. Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PSP sold 120,964 units between Mar. 31 and Apr. 6. By comparison, the Nintendo DS sold 55,190 units and the Wii sold 44,618 units in the same period. In addition to ranking as the No. 1 hardware for the week, the PSP charted the No. 1 software title for the second week, Capcom Co.’s Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G with another 488,208 units sold.
The social RPG sequel has sold more than 1.3 million units in two weeks of release in the territory. The DS ranked two titles and the Wii ranked three titles in the top ten software charts for the week. Sony this month released the Dualshock 3 controller for the Playstation 3 one week early to U.S. retailers. The product features rumble functionality not found in the Sixaxis controller. Wii in Mar. ranked as the No. 2 video game system in Feb. U.S. sales, moving 432,000 units in the month.
Nintendo will release the game title Mario Kart Wii on Apr. 27 in the U.S.
