Paying $599 for iPhone 3G that’s still locked to AT&T

Many of the current iPhone owners would be happy to upgrade to the 3G iPhone for the newer improvements. On certain plans, it could even mean a free next generation iPhone.
Normal price of an iPhone 2.0 is $199 but witha new 2-year contract with AT&T. Else its going to cost you.
Buying iPhone 3G Models without contract will make you pay $699 for a 16GB and $599 for a 8GB iPhone; although it is the first time the United States has had this option.
Weird thing is that if the phone is still locked to AT&T, does it make any sense to buy an iPhone 3G with no contract for $599 ? funny isnt it ?
For others without contract will have to pay high for the iPhone 3G Model.
