Microsoft: 720p no longer a requirement for Xbox 360

It has been revealed that Microsoft have dropped the 720p resolution requirement for its Xbox 360console. Thats according to Black Rock’s technical director David Jefferies who has been talking about the subject in a recent interview.

As reported from Eurogamer, Jefferies has stated that the reason for the drop is due to TV manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, LG and Philips equipping 720p LCD TVs with resolutions of 1366×768 rather than true 1280×720. What this means is that the image will be upscaled no matter what, using TV hardware.

In relation to the Xbox 360, developers such as Black Rock Studios are no longer required to stick to the 720p requirement, meaning they can add more graphical features such as extra anti-aliasing by using a slightly lower resolution.

Jefferies added: “Now we are free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit,”

OnLive: Closed Beta is now live

Good news for those looking to get into the OnLive beta now as OnLive boss Steve Perlman has just confirmed over at the official blog, that the cloud gaming service is now into closed beta status.

As reported from VG247, users looking to participate in the Closed Beta, can still enter over on theofficial website here. Having said that, it is only available for those of you based in the U.S.

Steve Perlman had this to say on the news: ”Beta is an AWESOME milestone for OnLive, capping many years of work. We’re really looking forward to hearing what you think. One of the key challenges that OnLive technology addresses is providing a high-quality, fast-response gaming experience over a wide range of situations.”

Sony ‘make.believe’ coming to PS3, PSP and PSN

Fresh from the release of the PS3 Slim and plans to introduce the world to 3D television, Sony have just announced that they are to give their brand logo / slogan a makeover.
As reported from Kotaku, Sony are planning to change their logo to ‘Sony – make.believe’, to replace the old ones. You can expect to see the new logo at the end of ads, commercials and investor reports.

It is thought that the logo will apply to all their Playstation branded products, (Playstation 3, PSP and PSN) as well as their upcoming range of 3D-powered televisions.

Bungie remain quiet on Halo: Reach for Xbox 360

Famed developers Bungie are remaining ‘hush hush’ on talk about the upcoming Halo: Reach title, as they are preferring to focus on the anticipated release of Halo 3: ODST, which is due in stores on September 22nd.
As reported from Eurogamer, Bungie’s Brian Jarrard has been responding to questions over on the Halo boards, with regards to info on Halo: Reach, the next title in the successful franchise.

He did however give some more details on the Halo: Reach beta, which will be taking place next year as he told fans to ”keep an ODST disc handy”, if you want to be part of the action.

Square: DLC on the way for future Final Fantasy games

Square-Enix have revealed that that the company are considering releasing DLC for future FinalFantasy titles, but there are no plans for extra content for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII, which will be released in Japan on PS3 before the end of the year.

Square’s Yoshi Kitase and Motomu Toriyama made the comments to VG247, during GamesCom 2009. Both of them also said that they are listening to their fans in Europe and North America, and are aware that DLC content is something that everyone wants.

If DLC does happen to be released along the way for Final Fantasy XIII, you can expect it to be item-or enemy based, and not a major update that would tie into the story.

It’s been a busy week here at Crave with a whole lot of gadget news coming out of IFA 2009 in Berlin, including Toshiba announcing a touch-screen tablet called the JournE. This is, perhaps, Toshiba’s effort to take on Apple’s mythical machine before it’s even official. Begun, the tablet wars have.

• We also saw some new photo and video gear from Panasonic. The company’s betting quite a bit on the future of cinema being in 3D, and we think that’s a good bet to make.

• Nokia’s World Conference, also in Germany, was the venue for the debut of a pair of new high-end music phones, the X6 and the X3. Nokia’s phones usually have boring names, but we’re glad they’re now naming them after experimental aircraft. Go, Nokia, go.

• Logitech’s new Wi-Fi radio is an improvement on its already awesome lineup and includes Flickr integration, which, while pointless, is rather cool. I want one.

• The PS3 and the Xbox 360 have finally–finally–bested the Wii from Nintendo in U.S. sales. It was a tough road to get to the top, but they made it. Welcome to the big league, guys.

• Just when I was sick of Auto-Tune and the millions of songs that abuse it, and just when I thought it was going away, T-Pain brings an app to the iPhone that Auto-Tunes everything. Thanks, Shor-tay. Thanks a lot.

• These robot sculptures are adorable and I wish they were real and I had one as a pet. I would name him “Clanky.” Or “Josh.”

• Oh, and there was some stuff going around about theiPhone getting MMS or something. I may have missed it.

Another cool feature about the Draft Combine, is that it will allow users to upload their player to the 2K servers. It will then store your player and allow you to use it in the NBA 2K10 Player Career mode as soon as the disc-based game is released.

PS3’s God of War Collection will be region free

Sony has confirmed that the upcoming God of War Collection, will be region-free, putting rumors to rest that it would be locked to certain regions. The pack contains God of War I and II and is due to be released in America before Christmas.

Sony confirmed the news to VG247, but the downside is that the European version of the Collection will not be released until early 2010. The U.S version however will contain 720p remakes of both games and will even have support for Trophies.

We say its time to start thinking about importing again eh. Bit unfair that the U.S gets all the fun, while Europeans are left twiddling their thumbs.
