Panasonic on Wednesday announced its Lumix DMC-GF1 digital camera. The new camera is coming in October for $900.

The DMC-GF1 is a new Micro Four Thirds camera — a DSLR-like camera with interchangeable lenses, but one lacking the pentaprism and mirror found in actual DSLRs, making it possible to make the body smaller and more compact.

The DMC-GF1 features a 12-megapixel sensor and the ability to record 1280 x 720 High Definition video using the AVCHD Lite format. It can also record Motion JPEG in 1280 x 720 and other video recording formats.

[ama:camera,1,new]

Other features of the camera include seven preset effects in its “My Color” mode, which let users set the color, brightness and saturation levels of their shots; Intelligent Auto mode, which stabilizes video, and manages face recognition, auto-focus, ISO, exposure, and other factors when shooting still images.

The DMC-GF1 sports a built-in flash and 3.0-inch LCD display with 460,000-dot resolution and wide viewing angle. Images are written to an SD or SDHC memory card, and a dust reduction system is built-in.

The DMC-GF1 will bow in two kits, both priced at $900. One bundles the Lumix G 29mm/F1.7 ASPH, a “pancake” lens; the other includes the Lumix G Vario 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH/Mega O.I.S. lens. An optional Live View Finder will be available for $200. Lens adapters priced at $250 let DMC-GF1 users use Leica lenses.

Apple on Thursday released updates to its iLife ’09 applications, the iLife Support software those apps rely on, and a Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update, which extends raw image compatibility for applications like Aperture and iPhoto. The updates are available from the Software Update system preference and Apple’s Web site.

[ama:iphone,1,new]

The Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update adds support for new camera models like the Canon EOS 500D, Canon Rebel T1i and Canon EOS Kiss Digital X3; Nikon D5000; and Olympus E-30.

iLife Support 9.0.3 contains system software resources shared by the iLife apps. The update addresses general compatibility issues, improved stability for the Media Browser and fixes other minor issues, including fixes to memory leaks in the Media Browser, display issues associated with displaying custom folders, and maintains correct image dates when importing from iPhoto to Aperture.

iDVD 7.0.4 is another general compatibility fix. IOt also corrects a problem where iDVD is unable to add a title or comment to an image in the image details list.

iMovie 8.0.3 adds support for cameras and camcorders that support the 720p AVCHD Lite standard. Deleting a beat marker no longer modifies the project duration. The video effects palette now uses the correct thumbnail for still images.

iPhoto 8.0.3 fixes issues associated with publishing to MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr. Slideshow playback has been improved, and GPS information is embedded in e-mailed photos and exported JPG files.

Japan’s Canon Inc, the world’s largest digital camera maker, revived on Friday plans to build a $180 million factory as demand holds firm for its high-end single-lens reflex cameras, lifting its shares 1.6 percent.

[ama:cannon,1,new]

Canon, which competes with Nikon Corp and Sony Corp, had previously postponed a January construction start due to the global crisis that plunged Japanese tech companies into losses as demand dried up.

Building would now start in July and the plant in southern Japan would start production in March or April next year, a spokesman said, adding that an announcement on the details would come in the afternoon.

Sales of digital SLRs — advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses — have been one of the few bright spots in the technology sector, holding firm while sales for large-screen flat TVs and PCs faltered.

The Nikkei business daily reported Canon was likely to scale back its planned investment in the factory by a few billion yen, from a planned 17.4 billion yen.

It would start construction on two of three facilities, delaying the third, it said, without citing sources.

The plant, as previously planned, would have an annual capacity of 4 million cameras.

Global unit shipments of digital SLRs rose 8 percent in April from the same month last year although revenues fell 13 percent, the Camera and Imaging Products Association said, as manufacturers cut prices.

That compares with a 24 percent fall in shipments of compact cameras, along with a 35 percent revenue fall, said the industry group, which polls 14 major digital camera makers.

Shares of Canon rose 50 yen to 3,170 yen against a 0.7 percent rise in the Nikkei average.
