Acer is dubbing the new-look 8920G Gemstone the “world’s first HD notebook”, which might raise a few eyebrows over at Toshiba, who’ve been pushing HD Qosmios for as long as we can remember. [UPDATE: Acer has clarified this for us, saying the 6920G is a world first 18.4inch full HD notebook].

Still, the new 18.4inch unit is looking for very tasty considering the price – $2699. That’s with Blu-ray, 1920 x 1080 pixels, an 8ms widescreen, GeForce 9500M GS graphics, and Premium Dolby Home Theatre including a “tube” style subwoofer. There’s also HDMI and HDCP.

The other good news? Acer have “enhanced” (read, changed) their Gemstone design for the 8920G and the other new model the 16inch 6920G. Gone is the light-grey ceramic-look (which frankly, we didn’t like), and in is a black, blue and silver colour scheme which looks a lot slicker.

Other touches include the holographic Acer logo and some blue LEDs, which might be slightly distracting in a darkened room while watching movies.

Acer has also added a textured trackpad, which reminded as vaguely of a golfball – something HP has also done with the metallic grill finish on its notebooks.

The 16inch 6920G version comes with 3 speakers and is priced at $2499.
